Why Brisbane cars grow mould so easily
Mould needs three things: moisture, warmth and something organic to eat. A closed car in a Brisbane summer supplies all three better than almost anywhere in the country. Interior temperatures over 60 degrees, humidity that sits high for weeks, and upholstery full of skin cells, food crumbs and dust.
It almost always starts with water that should not be there. A window left down in a storm. A blocked sunroof drain. A perished door or windscreen seal. A spilled drink that soaked into the foam and never fully dried. Once moisture is trapped under a seat or in the carpet underlay, growth starts within 24 to 48 hours.
What you can see is a fraction of what is there. By the time visible fuzz appears on a seat belt or a seat base, spores are through the carpet underlay, into the foam and usually circulating in the air conditioning system. Wiping the visible patch removes the evidence and none of the problem, which is why it always returns.
It is also a genuine health issue, not just a smell. Mould spores in a sealed cabin are an irritant for anyone, and materially worse for asthma and allergy sufferers. If your car smells musty every time you turn the air on, that is what you are breathing.
How we actually get rid of it
Four stages. Skip any of them and it grows back within weeks.
Find the water
There is always a source. We check door and window seals, sunroof drains, boot seals and the cabin filter housing. If we find it we tell you, because treating mould without fixing the leak is money wasted.
Remove it physically
Extraction and agitation to lift spores out of the fabric and foam rather than pushing them deeper. This is the slow part and it is the part that matters most.
Kill what is left
High temperature steam through affected areas, then an antimicrobial treatment. Heat and the right chemistry kill spores that vacuuming alone will always leave behind.
Treat the whole cabin
An ozone treatment through the sealed cabin with the air conditioning running, so the vents and ducting get treated too. That is where the musty smell usually lives.
Vent system flush
Mould in the evaporator and ducting recirculates every time you turn the fan on. Our air vent flush, an optional add on, clears it, and on a mould job it is not optional.
Honest assessment
If the carpet underlay is saturated and rotten, no amount of cleaning fixes it and we will tell you that rather than take your money for a result we cannot deliver.

One word "Sublime" I had an accident, I had left a full glass bottle of rum in the front seat of my kia stinger on a very hot day .... and you can guess what happened, yes it cracked in half & all the rum soaked into the seat & onto the carpet underneath. I mopped it up best I could & carpet cleaned it twice but still the smell of rum was still there, yuk. Until Nathan from High Shine detailed my interior. My car was recently broken into and oil sprayed throughout, along with forensics dust from the qps and months of neglecting to clean my children occupied car. I booked in for an urgent detail, unfortunately due to time constraints it wasn't able to be completed the first go around (our office closes at 430), Zaak called to check in on how the clean went and I mentioned a couple of things that still needed cleaning and he was quick to send grace back out to complete the job as soon as they had the chance. I called on Monday and the team arrived the next day. I purchased a commercial truck that previous owner had dogs that would travel with him. Dog hair was throughout the truck cabin and Matt didn’t hesitate to get stuck in. After two hours the job was done and the truck had never looked so good without a dog hair in sight. "Interior Restoration" & "Vent Flush" I was really worried about my Grandkids being in the car & thought I definitely needed a professional to do the interior of my daughter's car. Zac and Lawrence worked on our two cars today, the heat was incredible but that didn't phase them. Could not be happier with the result. My Pajero is over 15 years old, and the paint had accumulated its fair share of swirl marks, I honestly did not expect it to come up this well. The team did a fantastic job; the paint now has a deep gloss and mirror-like finish that makes the vehicle look years younger. Car mould FAQ
Can mould be completely removed from a car?
In most cases, yes. Where the moisture source is fixed and the underlay has not rotted, a full extraction, steam, antimicrobial and ozone treatment removes it and the smell with it. Where a car has sat wet for months the underlay may need replacing, and we will tell you that upfront rather than after taking your money.
Is mould in a car actually dangerous?
It is an irritant for everyone and a genuine problem for asthma and allergy sufferers. A sealed cabin concentrates spores, and running the air conditioning circulates them. It is worth dealing with rather than living with.
Why does the mould keep coming back?
Because the water source is still there. A perished seal, a blocked sunroof drain or a leaking windscreen will keep re-wetting the same area. We look for the source as part of the job and tell you what we find, because treating the mould alone is temporary.
How long does mould removal take?
Usually 4 to 6 hours, longer if the whole carpet needs lifting. Ozone treatment adds time on top, and the car needs to air out afterwards. We will give you a realistic time when we quote.
Will my car smell of chemicals afterwards?
No. Ozone breaks down to plain oxygen and leaves no residual scent, which is exactly why we use it instead of a fragrance. The car should smell of nothing at all when we are done.
