At the shop is the right call when the paint needs real correction first, when the coating needs a controlled cure overnight, or when it is raining. Dust, wind and direct sun are the three things that ruin a coating while it flashes off, and a driveway gives you all three.

What a ceramic coating actually does to your paint
A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that bonds chemically to your clear coat and becomes part of the surface. Wax and spray sealants sit on top of the paint and wash off. This does not.
Once it cures you get an extremely hard, water repelling shell over the paintwork. Water beads and rolls off and takes the dirt with it. Bird droppings and tree sap cannot etch into the clear coat, because the coating takes the hit first and the coating is replaceable.
What it will not do is stop a stone chip. Nothing short of paint protection film does that, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling you something. A coating protects against the chemical and UV damage that ruins paint slowly, which is most of what actually happens to a car in Brisbane.
Why paint fails faster in Brisbane than it should
Paint does not fail evenly across the country. What kills a finish here is specific, it is seasonal, and it is most of why a coating pays for itself faster in Queensland than it does down south.
The summer bonnet cycle
A dark bonnet parked out in a Brisbane January sits a long way above air temperature, then cools right down overnight, and does it again the next day. That expansion and contraction is what drives clear coat failure, and it runs for five months a year here.
Bore and tank water spotting
Bore and tank water carry far more dissolved mineral than town supply, so a garden sprinkler hitting a parked car leaves deposits that bake on and start etching the clear coat. It is the single most common paint damage we are called out to in the suburbs.
Salt air on the bayside
If you park anywhere from Wynnum through Manly to Victoria Point, your car is sitting in salt-laden air every day. It accelerates oxidation on paint and corrosion on anything unprotected, and it never takes a day off.
Storm season fallout
From October the storms bring tree sap, leaf tannin and a layer of grit that gets dragged across the paint by the next wash. A coated surface releases most of it before contact, which is where the swirl marks come from in the first place.
UV load, all year
Brisbane does not get a winter off. The UV index that fades a dashboard and chalks a red bonnet is high here nine months of the year, which is why paint that would last a decade in Melbourne starts going flat after five.
Bird droppings in the heat
Acidic to begin with, and in thirty degrees they start etching within hours rather than days. On unprotected paint that is a permanent mark. On a coated panel it wipes off.

Water on coated paint, on real Brisbane cars
Every one of these is a customer car we coated, photographed the day it was handed back. The beading is the whole point: water that sits proud of the surface is water that leaves carrying the dirt instead of drying onto it.
A coating locks in whatever is underneath it
The coating is the easy part. The hours underneath it are what separate a finish still performing in year five from one that gave up in year two, and none of it is visible on collection day. Which is exactly where the corners get cut.
Every swirl mark, every wash scratch and every water spot still in the paint when the coating goes on is sealed under it for the life of the coating. Skip the correction and you have not protected your car, you have preserved somebody else's bad wash technique for the next five years.
So correction comes before coating on every job here, and it is in the price rather than bolted on afterwards. On a genuinely new car there is often nothing to correct, and we will tell you that rather than charge you for a polish you do not need.

How we apply your coating
Every step matters. There are no shortcuts in a proper coating job, and this is why ours lasts.
Full decontamination wash
Foam pre-soak, contact wash, iron fallout removal and clay bar decontamination. Every surface has to be completely clean before any polishing or coating starts.
Paint inspection
Under dedicated LED lighting we go over every panel for swirl marks, scratches, water spots and oxidation. That decides what level of correction the car needs.
Paint correction
We machine polish the car to remove defects before coating. This is the step most people skip, and the reason their coating locks in swirls for years.
Panel prep and IPA wipe
After correction every panel is wiped with isopropyl alcohol to strip polish residue and oils. The surface has to be perfectly bare for the coating to bond to it.
Coating application
Panel by panel with specialist applicator blocks. Timing, temperature and humidity all get managed, which in a Brisbane summer is most of the job.
Controlled cure
The coating is levelled and left to cure away from dust, rain and direct sun. On the multi-year coatings that means a night in the shop rather than an hour in your driveway.
Final inspection
A last pass under lighting to confirm even coverage with nothing missed, nothing high and no holograms left in the paint.

Ceramic coating, against wax and against film
Three different jobs, and the honest answer is that a lot of cars do not need the most expensive one. Here is where each actually earns its money.
Wax, sealant or the dealer package

What the warranty actually covers
The industry has a credibility problem here, and it is worth naming. If somebody is offering you a lifetime or a 25 year coating warranty on a car that will be washed in a service station bay, read what is actually covered before you pay for it.
What we will tell you is what the coating does: three to five years of real performance on the paint, longer on some products, and the gloss and beading stay well past the point where a wax has given up entirely. If a coating we applied fails inside that window we come back and sort it out.
What keeps it alive is how it gets washed. Automated brush washes put swirls into any surface including a coated one, and harsh degreasers strip the top layer off it. Wash it properly, or let us keep it maintained, and it will go the distance.
Keeping the coating alive is most of the value
A coating is not a thing you buy once and forget. It is a surface that performs brilliantly while it is looked after and quietly stops working when it is not, and most of the coatings we are called out to replace early were never maintained at all.
So we run an upkeep program for coated cars: a proper contact wash on a schedule, with the pH neutral products the coating is designed for, and a set of eyes on the paint every visit. Monthly, fortnightly or weekly, and it keeps the thing you paid for doing its job.
It also means somebody notices the sprinkler that has been hitting your rear quarter every morning before it etches through the coating into the clear coat underneath.

One word "Sublime" I had an accident, I had left a full glass bottle of rum in the front seat of my kia stinger on a very hot day .... and you can guess what happened, yes it cracked in half & all the rum soaked into the seat & onto the carpet underneath. Ceramic coating questions, answered
How long does a ceramic coating last?
Three to five years of real performance on a professional coating applied over corrected paint, and longer on some products. Budget and dealer-applied coatings commonly stop beading inside six to twelve months, which is why we get called out to redo them.
Do I need paint correction before coating?
On anything but a genuinely new car, yes. The coating is transparent and it is semi-permanent, so every swirl mark and scratch underneath gets locked in for years. We include correction before every coating for exactly that reason, and on a new car we will tell you when there is nothing to correct.
Does ceramic coating stop stone chips?
No, and be careful of anyone who says otherwise. A coating is microns thick and a stone chip is an impact. Paint protection film is the answer for the front bar, the bonnet leading edge and the mirrors. A coating handles the chemical and UV damage, which is most of what actually ruins paint here.
Does it stop scratches?
It resists them. A 9H surface is harder than your clear coat alone, so light wash marks and minor abrasion are resisted rather than absorbed. A key down the door is still a key down the door.
Can you coat my car at home, or does it have to come to the shop?
Both work and it depends on the car. A newer car getting a single stage coating is straightforward in your driveway. If the paint needs real correction first, or the coating needs a controlled overnight cure, or the weather is against us, the Salisbury shop is the better call. How long does the job take?
A correction and coating usually runs across one to two days depending on the size of the car and the state of the paint. Paint-only coatings on a car in good condition are often a single day. We give you an accurate window once we have seen it.
What does it cost?
It depends on the size of the car, the condition of the paint and which level of protection you want, and anybody quoting a single number without asking those three things is guessing. Send us the car and a photo of the paint and you will have a real price within five minutes during business hours.
Is it worth it on a daily driver?
Often more than on a weekend car. A daily takes more UV, more bird droppings and far more washing, and washing is where most paint damage comes from. The car that lives outside under a tree is the one that benefits most.
Can I still wash the car normally?
Yes, and it gets easier. A coated car releases dirt far more readily, so a rinse and a gentle contact wash is usually all it needs. Stay out of automated brush washes, which put swirls into any surface, and keep harsh degreasers off it.
Is this the same as what the dealership sells?
Usually not. Dealer paint protection is commonly a sealant or an entry-grade coating applied quickly over uncorrected paint by somebody who is not a detailer, and sold at a price that assumes you will never compare it. If you have already bought one and it has stopped beading, that is why.
Can you coat the interior as well?
Yes, and we sell it on its own rather than only as an add-on. Leather and plastics get coated so they stop drying and cracking in the heat, and fabric gets a spill resistant treatment so the next coffee sits on top long enough to be wiped off instead of soaking into the padding.
What happens if the coating fails?
We come back and sort it out. What we will not do is sell you a 25 year warranty on a three to five year product, so you get the real number and an honest conversation about what keeps it alive.
